DocSoc reading and writing retreat:
As part of the DocSoc programme for 2016 we are very excited to be able to offer our members the opportunity to take part in a weekend reading and writing retreat at the Oakraven Field Centre (http://www.oakraven.org/) nestled in a tranquil location in the Forest of Dean.
The retreat will provide space for you to take a break from your normal routine and engage in a range of workshops and self-directed study. Over the duration of the weekend we aim to make advances in our academic writing, sharing daily goals, reflecting on our writing habits and engaging in informal discussions with students at different stages of their PhD studies.
The weekend will involve a mixture of workshops, discussion groups, focused study and social time. There will be two peer led workshops, Critical writing: How do you structure arguments and counter-arguments and Taming your thesis: your research in a nutshell. Additionally, there will be informal group discussions on reading strategies and effective time management. The remaining time will be set aside for reading and writing. Everyone will be encouraged to take part in independent study during the day with the option for more in the evening if you’re on a roll!
Whatever stage you are at with your research this weekend will provide space for PhD related discussion, uninterrupted study as well as some well-needed time to socialise and relax.
The retreat will run from 4pm on Friday 3rd June until 2pm on Sunday 5th June. The cost for the weekend is £45, which includes food and travel to and from the retreat location. To book your place please visit the DocSoc page on the Student Union website https://www.thestudentsunion.co.uk/soc/DocSoc/
