With Freshers’ Week 2015 just around the corner, there’s never been a more exciting time to come to UWE Bristol.
The official opening of The Students’ Union at UWE!
With Freshers’ Week 2015 just around the corner, there’s never been a more exciting time to come to UWE Bristol. This September sees the opening of the brand new purpose-built Students’ Union building at Frenchay campus, with the official launch event on Tuesday 1 September.
The £9.8m new development follows a successful rebrand of The Students’ Union at UWE. The new building is located at the heart of the campus, offering students social and leisure spaces, as well as services such as shops, bars, Student Lettings, Advice Centre and JobShop.
The new home of The Students’ Union covers two buildings, spanning 3,000 square metres and providing an accessible space upon which to build the best student experience for UWE Bristol students. The new energy efficient facility is split into two buildings, Union One and Union Two. Union One provides a hub for student activities, with multi-purpose engagement areas, a Students’ Union run shop and a bookable studio space. Union One also houses brand new vibrant spaces to enhance the work of student reps, volunteering, sports and societies. Union Two accommodates the bar, kitchen and Starbucks coffee shop, as well as HD projectors showcasing all the latest sport and club night events. The new development also includes outdoor landscaped spaces and a courtyard, which can be used for major occasions and events.
Both Glenside and Bower Ashton campuses have benefitted from the rebrand with significant refurbishments and facility improvements. Glenside campus celebrates the success of last year’s introduction of Starbucks with a further improved food and drinks menu and extended opening hours. The Students’ Union Bar at Glenside also looks forward to holding brand new monthly quiz nights and a whole host of new events this year. As Bower Ashton campus is known as the home of creativity at UWE Bristol, the Students’ Union Bar at Bower opens an extended menu from Freshers’ Week this year, offering diverse and delicious daily specials including vegetarian and vegan options.
The Students’ Union at UWE President Jack Polson described the opening event as an amazing opportunity to showcase all the hard work the Students’ Union had done over the last few months. He said, “The increased social space will create more opportunities for students to meet, engage in amazing opportunities and feel part of their student community. There has never been a better time to be at UWE Bristol, so join in, speak up and be more!"
Vice-Chancellor, Professor Steve West said, “It’s wonderful that we’re able to offer these fantastic new facilities to our students. This centre is about putting students at the heart of our thinking and will provide a vibrant and attractive environment for them to engage fully with the SU and what it has to offer.”
This year is set to be the biggest and most flamboyant Freshers’ Week the Students’ Union has ever produced, with more acts than ever before including comedy legend Lee Nelson and the incredible DJ Fresh hosting the Freshers’ Closing Party, it’s no wonder ticket sales have skyrocketed this year!
