Is Voluntourism Ethical?

Tue 09 February 2021 18:00-19:00

How can we make sure our International Volunteering role is safe, ethical and sustainable?

We will be screening 'The Voluntourist', a short film developed by the Chloe Sanguinetti that tells the stories of international volunteers and the potential problems in this industry. Join to watch the film and stay to discuss the ethics of 'voluntourism'.

We will be watching the film in the first 30 minutes of the session, and a discussion will take place after. If you would like to watch the film in advanced it is available on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E16iOaAP4SQ

If you are interested in volunteering abroad, please do consider checking out UWE's partner organisations Think Pacific and Play Action International. Think Pacific even have a Virtual Internship open to UWE students, so you can take part in a safe and ethical International Development project from the comfort of your own home.

The UWE Go Global team can help you with advice on what to ask, and how to choose a responsible international volunteering organisation, whether or not this is one of our partners. Email us at goglobal@uwe.ac.uk

This event is part of a national programme for Student Volunteering Week #SVW2021
