Kicking off our 50th Anniversary Celebrations, we have a fantastic panel of high profile guests discussing their own lived experiences surrounding mental health and wellbeing.
A key priority of The Students’ Union is mental health and wellbeing. Whether this is lobbying for better mental health services, or trying to reduce the stigma that surrounds mental health and leaves people feeling isolated. The more we speak about mental health, the less stigma that will exist.
First up, we have invited two Olympians to speak at this event. Helen Richardson-Walsh (MBE) and Kate Richardson-Walsh (OBE) are Olympic medal winning hockey players, Kate winning bronze in London and both winning gold in Rio. They have also shared over 600 international appearances together. The couple have been married for 8 years, and have since been doing lots of work surrounding LGBT inclusion and mental health in sport. Helen suffered from two ruptured discs in her back and subsequently missed a spot in the 2014 World Cup squad; she now talks openly about her struggles with depression and trying to become "comfortable with feeling uncomfortable". Kate was the captain of the GB squad and was held in such high esteem by all the Team GB athletes she was selected as the flag bearer for the closing ceremony.
Joining them on the panel we have Daniel Edmund who has emerged as a leader in discussing the issues around men’s mental health. He also works to bring positive change for numerous community groups, and has gone on to meet His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales in pursuit of working towards a better culture for all.
We’re extremely privileged and excited to announce that Helen, Kate and Daniel will be joining us online in this virtual panel event at 13:00 on Monday 14 June and we hope to see as many of you there as possible!
