DECOLONISING THE FACULTY OF ENVIRONMENT AND TECHNOLOGY at UWE: A SEMINAR SERIES
This series creates space for a dialogue among all FET staff and students, and interested others, on how we can better include diverse cultures and knowledge systems in the curricula. It is an exciting opportunity to hear and engage with speakers who look at geography, environmental management and technology from a decolonising perspective. The seminars will be held fortnightly on Wednesdays 1-2pm in Room 4Q07 in 2021 and 2E27 in 2022. Most of the sessions will be face-to-face with just the international contributors participating online.
Seminar 1 - October 13th ‘Why decolonise the geography, environmental management and technology curricula?’ Dr Karen Bell, Senior Lecturer in Environmental Management, UWE and Ian Solomon-Kawall (KMT), Hip-Hop musician, DJ and Climate Change Engagement and Diversity Project Manager at Bristol City Council.
Seminar 2 - October 27th ‘Were the Luddites right?’ Dr Gavin Mueller, Lecturer in New Media and Digital Culture, University of Amsterdam and author of ‘Breaking Things at Work’, an exploration of who benefits and who is burdened by new technologies in the workplace.
Seminar 3 - November 10th ‘Learning from the environmental movements of the Global South: Exploring the conflict between trade unions and green movements in Kerala, India’, Dr Silpa Satheesh, Assistant Professor, School of Development, Azim Premji University, Bangalore, India.
