10 things you didn't know about The SU

Welcome to The Students' Union at UWE - remember, we are here to help you settle in and enjoy your time at university. We're run by students, for students.

For most of you, this will be your first experience of a students' union, so here are 10 things you may not know about how we work and what we offer:

1. Automatically a member

That's right, you don't have to do anything to become a member of The Students' Union. You automatically become a member as soon as you register as a student at UWE Bristol, along with each and every one of the 28,000 strong UWE Bristol student community.

2. Run by students, for students

The Students’ Union is run by five full-time elected student leaders and a number of part-time officers. Each year we hold The Leadership Race where you get to vote for and elect your new Presidents and Officers. They are here to represent you to all levels of the University and make sure your voices are heard in order to implement positive change to the student experience.

3. Free and independent advice centre

We have our own Advice Centre at The Students’ Union which provides free and independent services. Whether you need personal, financial, academic or accommodation advice, the team are available at The Students' Union, Frenchay between 10:00-16:00, Monday – Friday, and every week during term time at Glenside and Bower.

4. Student spaces

There are a number of student spaces at The Students’ Union, whether you want somewhere chilled to study, fancy a bit of free table tennis to unwind or want to book out our Activity Studio for the afternoon. There is always something going on in our student spaces, and we have offices, shops and bars at Frenchay, Glenside and Bower Ashton campuses.

5. Cheap food and drink

The Students’ Union Bar and Shops provide great student-friendly priced food and drink during the week and at weekends during term time. Whether you need a meal deal for on the go or you fancy sharing a plate of nachos with friends in the evening, we’ve got you covered.

6. Over 170 sports clubs and societies

We want to make sure that there is something for everyone to get involved in at The Students' Union, and with over 170 sports clubs and societies, we offer just that! From special interest and academic societies to a range of sports, including Ultimate Frisbee and Windsurfing, you're sure to find something that interests you. You can meet many of our Sports and Societies at the Freshers' Fair on 20 September, or browse them online now.

7. JobShop

Our JobShop advertises part-time and holiday jobs, both on campus in our shops and bars and around Bristol in a range of industries. Just sign up to our mailing list online to receive regular vacancies.

8. Sustainability

The Students' Union is constantly working towards more sustainable goals. Our strategic plan envisions us “embedding sustainability into all that we do”. From banning the sales of plastic bags at our shops, to introducing compostable coffee cups and straws in our bars, if you want to find out more about our sustainability action and how you can get involved, email our Green Team at thegreenteam@uwe.ac.uk

9. Late Night Do It Right
