The Bristol Varsity Series is the second largest Varsity event within the UK, with nearly 5,000 students, staff, alumni and local community members coming together to participate, volunteer or spectate over a series of sporting events. Our Bristol Varsity is joint with the University of Bristol and features a whole host of exciting events for you to get involved in this year. The aim, of course, is for us to become the biggest, as well as best in the UK!
From last year’s events, students from both UWE and Bristol fed back on how they wanted to see the series develop. We took this on board and have adapted the series to look like the following this year:
- As a result, and in line with the city and both Universities’ strategic priorities, the series will focus on participation and community integration. Participation events will be integrated into both institutions grass roots and residences programme; working in partnership with established events and National Governing Bodies [NGBs]. These events will be throughout the academic year.
- The competitive sporting element to Varsity will be condensed into a week in March, where the strongest collaborative sporting bids will be showcased as great standalone events. This will allow you to either play competitively for your university against Bristol for the Varsity point, support TeamUWE by being a spectator to your course mates, housemates and sporting friends, or get involved by being a volunteer throughout the week.
- We are focusing on developing the number of intra-mural and halls Varsity teams this year.
Excitingly, the Varsity Series this coming year is collaborating with the Bristol 10K, where all students, staff and alumni from both universities will be able to come together with subsidised entry, running in a gigantic red and maroon wave at the event. With this in mind, there are some great opportunities for you to get moving, with a 2K with a Halloween twist and a 5K in March to test out how that ‘couch to 5K’ in you is going. Whether you’re a seasoned runner looking for a PB, or you want to set yourself a challenge; run it, walk it, 3-leg it, jog it…who cares, get involved!
If that’s not enough, there’s an event to finish the academic year - think Pimms, think sunshine, think sitting on the harbourside, think your best pair of sunnies, think live music and think of some exciting rowing sprints. We will be closing the series with our longest standing event, the Varsity Boat Race!
In order to deliver the series, we need you! So if you want to volunteer as part of the event team as opposed to being a competitor, get in touch. This year is shaping up to look like an amazing year for the Varsity Series! Make sure you don’t miss out, get involved!
