Bahkai Wynter, VP Societies and Communication
Your VP Societies and Communication, Bahkai Wynter, talks about societies and his experience of starting his own one last year.
We have over 100 societies, which exist entirely for the benefit of you, our students. I’m in charge of our entire society program and ensuring its success. Whether it’s exploring your passion or discovering a new one, our highly versatile program has something for you. There is no limit to the amount of societies you can join and no limit to the number of memories and experiences you’ll walk away with! As cheesy as it sounds, it’s a great place to make new friends.
I actually founded UWE Comedy last year, a small society where I met a ton of like-minded new people who shared the same passion. We were a community of people who organised monthly stand up shows and events - some audience members even became regulars who attended every month! In my experience, it doesn’t always have to be about gaining new skills but finding somewhere to belong when entering a completely different environment.
Not only is it good to join a society, it’s also good to get involved in any society events going on throughout the year. They are usually open to non-members and provide an exciting chance to do something different - plus I’ll probably be there getting some juicy content for snapchat and Instagram (add us @thestudentsunion).
The types of things societies get up to are weekly meetings, trips to various places, events held both on and off campus, shows, competitions and a great deal more. If you want a comprehensive list of our societies, go to thestudentsunion.co.uk/societies - you can also buy memberships online. Be sure check out Student Media to stay up to date with events and news! We have our student led Hub Radio station and student magazine.
I hope to meet as many students as possible, so come up to The Students’ Union building - I welcome any distractions as long as it’s either coming from students or a pizza delivery man.
