Erin Mills, VP Sports and Health
Your VP Sports and Health, Erin Mills, talks about her experience of joining a sports club and why you should give it a go too.
Before I came to uni I played very little sport and decided to give rugby a go for the first time ever when I arrived at UWE (start small, hey?). I became VP Sports and Health in my final year and the rugby team was for sure one of the best parts of my university experience. I’m not telling you all to go out and try rugby but my advice would be to get involved and try new things, you don’t know what it could lead to and how much it can change your life (sounds dramatic but it’s true).
So, sports at UWE Bristol - where do I begin? The Students’ Union has 42 clubs, offering both individual and team sports for you to get involved with, pretty cool huh? The clubs range from traditional sports such as Football, Rugby and Netball to new and exciting groups like Ultimate Frisbee and M.A.S.S (Muscle and Athletic Sports Society), so there is something sporty for everyone.
Many of these clubs play competitively in British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) leagues throughout the year, which means teams compete against different universities across the UK. At the moment, we have a number of male and female teams from various clubs representing UWE Bristol.
Have a look at all the clubs available at thestudentsunion.co.uk/sports and browse the club’s social media accounts to see all the shenanigans they get up and what you could soon be a part of.
If being uber-competitive and training religiously 3 or 4 times a week isn’t your thing, there are also loads of opportunities to play on a social level, focussing more on having fun with your new found bezzie mates. We offer a programme called Off The Wall where, for a yearly fee, you can try a range of activities without the commitment of joining a club.
As well as competing in BUCS, we have the annual Varsity Series with our friends next door, University of Bristol. We challenge them in a number of sports and events throughout the year and basically have a great time! The series is kick-starting this year with the infamous Colour Run on Wednesday 4 October, look out for more details and get involved at varsityseries.com.
