Collaborative art exhibition inspired by the work of charities the Za Foundation and Humanatis
UWE Bristol student, Terry Bennett, with the support of his fellow students, The Students’ Union and the Head of Art, Karen Lewis, put together an exciting collaborative art exhibition this June at the Arnolfini. His idea was inspired by the work of charities the Za Foundation and Humanatis. The Za foundation is a charity that works with young people in Nkomazi. The area has one of the highest rates of HIV in the world (over 40%) which has had a devastating impact on the lives of young people. There are now an estimated 12,000 orphans and vulnerable children living in Nkomazi. Terry’s idea was to raise money and awareness of these charities by creating an exhibition that combined the artwork of these vulnerable children along with UWE artists’ works. The children's positive response to Terry's request to create arts and crafts for this exhibition was amazing and inspired a wide range of responses from UWE students. The exhibition received over 400 visitors over the week which exceeded expectations and the feedback was incredible. The Arnolfini management said it was’ a superb and moving exhibition’. The CASS art team who sponsored it said ‘it was the best and most worthwhile event they've been involved with’. The charities have been over the moon with the response and said that this will have a really positive impact on the children they support. Any artwork left over from the exhibition will be sold via other fundraising events run by the charities in the future. In total the Exhibition raised around £800 through the sale of the artwork. A great achievement.
