After a bye-week for UWE lacrosse, the Men’s 1’s team was eager to face a Swansea side that had travelled a fair distance from South Wales. UWE have recovered from recent injuries and regained key defensive player Anoop Baines, as well as midfielder and captain Maurice Wills.
As the game got underway on a bitterly cold Wednesday afternoon at Filton sports ground, UWE’s full strength team quickly got on the score sheet, eventually closing out the first quarter with an 8-goal lead. This dominance continued, with several goals from Callum Martin, Shuaib Blake and Maurice Wills to close out the half with a 16-goal lead to nothing. After the halftime break, Swansea looked to push forward and be more direct, but they were no match for fresher Seb Bray in goal, who comfortably dealt with the shots, and a galvanized defense of Nic Dutton, Will Wills and Anoop Baines.
Further goals from face-off man Ryan Wilton, Louis Brudenall-Jones and Nathan Spectre all but confirmed the victory, closing out the penultimate quarter with a 27-goal advantage. The final quarter saw fresher Kieran Morley get his first goal for the first teamand UWE’s free-scoring continuing, with the game finishing UWE 35 - 0 Swansea. Once again thanks to Swansea for turning up and to our lacrosse family turning up to give their support!
The midseason dip in form seems to have been eradicated, and with the return of injured players, UWE can hopefully push up the Western 2a table, but more importantly, carry this form into the cup towards the end of the season and hopefully lift some silverware.
