Olympic medallists, Helen and Kate Richardon-Walsh are visiting The Students' Union to talk about LGBT inclusion and mental health in sport.
A key priority of The Students’ Union this year is mental health and wellbeing. Whether this is lobbying for better mental health services, or trying to reduce the stigma that surrounds mental health and leaves people feeling isolated. The more we speak about mental health, the less stigma that will exist.

As part of this work we have invited two Olympians to speak to our students. Helen Richardson-Walsh (MBE) and Kate Richardson-Walsh (OBE) are Olympic medal winning hockey players, Kate winning bronze in London and both winning gold in Rio. They have also shared over 600 international appearances together. The couple have been married for 4 years, and have since been doing lots of work surrounding LGBT inclusion and mental health in sport. Helen suffered from two ruptured discs in her back and subsequently missed a spot in the 2014 World Cup squad; she now talks openly about her struggles with depression and trying to become "comfortable with feeling uncomfortable". Kate was the captain of the GB squad and was held in such high esteem by all the Team GB athletes she was selected as the flag bearer for the closing ceremony. We’re extremely privileged and excited to annouce that Helen and Kate will be joining us at The Students’ Union at 17:00 on Monday 27 November and we hope to see as many of you there as possible!
