The UWE Ultimate ladies took to Bath to participate in the Women’s Indoor Nationals with 21 teams taking part in the competition that was played over the weekend. The Ladies had a close games vs Exeter 1 and a very close 5-4 loss vs Cardiff 1; followed by a 9-0 win over Swansea! On Sunday they faced Warwick with a tight 5-3 loss. This then turned around to a win over Cardiff 3 with a great 10-1 win. The ladies ended the day playing Bath, Birmingham and FXU to finish in a respectable 14th. An amazing effort for a team that have only played together for under 3 months.
The highlight of the weekend was that the UWE ladies won the Spirit Trophy. Spirit in Ultimate is one of the biggest things that make it unique. With Ultimate being self-umpired, spirit means that calls (any disagreements) are dealt with in a fair and friendly manner. Having good spirit means a more fun game for everyone, and you get a sweet trophy.
Spirit is submitted after each game and marked on 5 criteria where you rate the other team between a 0-5 with 2 being 'average'. The 5 areas are: Rules knowledge and use, fouls and body contact, Fair-Mindedness, Positive attitude and finally communication. With an Average of 11.4 overall, the girls had the best spirit of universities in the west.
