World AIDS Day
On the 1st December every year, World AIDS Day is held – this provides a chance for everyone across the globe to come together to show their support for those living with HIV, remember those who have died, and to take a fight against HIV.
World AIDS Day is important as there are roughly 100,000 UK people who are living with HIV. Around the world it is estimated that about 34,000,000 who have the virus. HIV was first properly identified in 1984, but 35,000,000 lives have been taken due to HIV or AIDS – one of the most damaging pandemics we know.
We believe that World AIDS Day is really important as it is a constant reminder to both the general population and the Government that this is still something which needs to be tackled. HIV is still here and we still need to fund research to advance treatments. Not only this but we need to break the stigma attached and change attitudes through awareness campaigning and education.
Today is a chance for you to unite and stand in solidarity with those who have HIV. We will be selling red ribbons at reception, the shop in Union 1, and the coffee hut in Union 2, which is a simple way to show your support.
The support doesn’t stop today either. You can still get involved in campaigning and fundraising – it’s really important to keep the awareness going throughout the year! One great way you could fundraise is to get involved with UWE RAG.
