Jomila Begum, Charity Week Rep for Islamic Society and BME Officer
Going into Charity Week with high visions and little time made it seem impossible. However, with the support of The Students' Union and our amazing volunteers, we pulled of what is now known to be UWE’s best Charity Week to date! Hitting double figures for the first time raising a whopping £10,322.89
Charity Week 2018 was an immense success. We had 2 representatives, 57 volunteers and 7 events, excluding the cake sales. Charity Week 2018 works in collaboration with Islamic Relief to help aid 7 projects; Mali, Syria, India, Afghanistan Pakistan, Somalia and South Africa. 2018 marked the year where a solid foundation was built for years to come. Different ethnic/ religious groups came together to host a number of events. Not only did we aim to collaborate with societies within our university, but we also collaborated with The University of Bristol as well as the community groups within Bristol. We aimed to have a host of events in order to cater for every single individual and groups by hosting events such as; a global food festival, football, UWE charity week apprentice, games and pizza night, beyond Bilal talk (an insight into the black history of Islam to celebrate black history month), ladies night and finally a Bristol dinner to celebrate the efforts put into the success of the charity week. Alongside these events, we held a Krispy Kreme stall in the afternoons outside of OneZone and even got the Atrium involved where they sold the doughnuts to contribute towards the cause. The vision of Charity Week 2018 was about unity and the theme was based on sustainability. Going into Charity Week with high visions and little time made it seem impossible. However, with the support of The Students' Union and our amazing volunteers, we pulled of what is now known to be UWE’s best Charity Week to date! Hitting double figures for the first time raising a whopping £10,322.89. Our vision of unity, as well as implementing sustainability to each of our events this year proved to be a huge success. I hope with the foundation in place, a clear vision, and a strong community this will undoubtedly be start of something bigger at UWE Bristol.
