On Tuesday 20 November myself and UWE RAG clubbed together to host our first ever ‘Sports Does Strictly’ event within The Students' Union Bar at Frenchay, all in aid of United through Sport. United through Sport is a charity that works with disadvantaged ocmmunities across Africa, South America and Asia to help children reach their full potential in sport, education and health.
The event saw 8 members of the Dance Club acting as the ‘professionals’ paired with 8 members of different sports clubs acting as the ‘novice’ dancers. These clubs included members from American Football, Volleyball, Lacrosse, Men’s Rugby, Snow Sports, Cheerleading, Boat and Colin, our very own Sports Club Development Manager at The Students' Union.
The couples had just under two weeks to learn the routines, rehearse and perfect them. Each couple danced a different style, from 90’s Hip-hop to Salsa, all basis were covered! The night itself was a great success with over 230 people in attendance and £727 raised for the charity. The judges were on top form, consisting of myself, our Club Coordinator Amie and our very tough to please VP Societies and Communications, Freddie! All hosted by the lovely Josie!
The winning couple were John from Volleyball and his dance partner, Chrystal, who did an amazing job at the Rock and Roll dance to Elvis Presley’s Blue Suede Shoes. A very great performance and a well deserved win.
I believe that it is important to come together as a united #TeamUWE Sports community in order to do our bit for charity and after the success of this event we are looking at more to do within the new year, so watch this space!
