The Eleanor Rose Ellis Scholarship

The Students' Union at UWE & UWE in partnership is offering a £1,000 scholarship with a maximum single award of £750.

2017|2018 Applications are now open. Applications will close on Friday 15th December 2017.

The successful UWE student will have to demonstrate that they have made a significant contribution to student sport as a competitor, official, referee|umpire, coach or volunteer.

Both undergraduates and postgraduates are eligible to apply.

Eleanor Rose Ellis was a student at UWE, where she was an active member of the Boat Club [UWEBC]. In her final year she was elected onto the club committee as Events and Fundraising Officer.

Eleanor graduated in 2010. Sadly two years later at the age of 23 years, on 12th May 2012 she lost her life to cervical cancer. This spurred two friends and fellow Club members, Hannah Lawton and Lauren Morton to row across the Atlantic in her memory. Eleanor was an active member of UWEBC throughout her time as a student at UWE, her approach to life was not what inspired them; it was her approach to death. She realised only too late that life is short and you never know when your last breath might be.

She was stubborn, adamant that she would fit in the things she wanted to do before she lost her battle. She never gave up, she fought every day, every minute and every second to do and see one more thing. She was their inspiration, an inspiration that spurred them on to take part in a brutal challenge of human endurance, a challenge that changed their outlook on life forever. Eleanor had such an impact on so many that UWEBC named their Senior Men’s eight in her memory, a crew she used to cox, it was rowed for the first time at the Varsity Boat Race 2012, the day poignantly, she lost her life.

Likewise; The Varsity Boat Race Executive approved the naming one of the Varsity Blade Race’s in her memory, a race she competed in. Both UWE and Bristol University decided in 2013 that the Inspirational Friends Atlantic crew would be the recipient of the funds raised in the Varsity Series, where over 1,500 students from both Universities came together in the hand of friendship & embracing the rivalry between one another to raise £8,760.42.

In December 2013 the Inspirational Friends crew rowed across the Atlantic in the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Rowing Race. 96 days later with a few hundred miles remaining, Hannah and Lauren were forced to retire from the race with technical problems in what is billed as the world’s toughest race “Our Atlantic Queens have been shining examples of the determination, courage and pure resolve that is needed to conquer the Atlantic Ocean.” Carsten Heron Olsen, Chief Executive of organisers Atlantic Campaigns.

In recognition of their passion, determination and resilience the Eleanor Rose Ellis Scholarship was established and announced at The Students' Union annual Sports Ball in 2015.

Applicants may be undergraduates or postgraduates. The scholarship will be awarded on the candidate’s special contribution to sport at UWE. They may be of any standard or ability. The winner will, however, have clearly demonstrated a contribution to their sport which clearly goes beyond their individual success in the sports arena.

The award may be used as a contribution towards any of the following activities:

  • Travel expenses in direct relation to the agreed activity
  • Coaching, umpiring or referee development
  • Attendance on sport related courses
  • Sports development, administration and / or leadership
