The Students’ Union are currently working towards two accreditations for Sustainability- Green Impact and Responsible Futures. We have recently won a Fairtrade Award for our shop and Coffee Bar and our current Sustainability Officer has won the ‘Spirit of 2015’ award for Bristol Green Capital.

Blurred Lines? Raising the Issue of Sexual Harassment at University 20-Nov-14 VP Community and Welfare Live

The VP Community and Welfare will be working on Freshers' publications in the coming months and reviewing information given to new students.

In November 2014, the VP Community and Welfare ran an Anti-Abuse Campaign at UWE this helped to lobby the university and engaged with a large number of students to take a zero tolerance approach.

The activity included students wearing white ribbons as well as making pledges as a result the Pro Vice Chancellor of UWE lobbied the Bristol Mayor to run a Bristol wide campaign against domestic abuse and violence. As a result of the Anti-Abuse Campaign the Intervention Initiative will be implemented across all faculties to educate students how to become an active bystander to take a zero tolerance approach to sexual abuse, harrassment and violence. Both Universities and Students' Union's in Bristol have signed a policy to take a zero tolerance approach.

The VP Community and Welfare is launching a 'Late Night Do It Right' campaign across Freshers' and beyond to engage with students on these key messages.

The Students' Union is sitting on a joint board with Bristol SU and the Univesities to propose projects to tackle sexual violence and harrassment including adopting a safe space policy. The Students' Union venues policies will reflect these changes when dealing with these matters. 

Christian Prayer Room 20-Nov-14 VP Community and Welfare Completed The VP Community and Welfare has passed this to the University and the multipfaith Chaplain who has taken it into consideration when planning space provision for the future. The faith space provision across the Univesity's campuses is currently being reviewed, there are plans to develop the Glenside faith space into an effective multifaith space over the next two academic years. Bower Ashton and the Arnolfini site have dedicated multifaith space for all students to access. The Community Hub will continue to provide multiple prayer rooms on Frenchay.

From January 2015 all Students’ Union’s bars will be serving from glass and mugs. The exemptions to this are for large events such as Lock-In and Freshers

Funds and Bursaries for Students 20-Nov-14 VP Community and Welfare Complete VP Community and Welfare has taken resolves to UWE Equality and Diversity Unit to discuss funding for students. This has also been taken to the UWE Money Advice and Funds Service for consideration. We are aware of national action on this issue through the NUS and will be engaging with future campaigns. This has also been raised with UWE Management in various discussions. UWE have committed to covering the, formerly government provided, Access to Learning fund for the 2014/2015 academic year. This fund which totals over £500,000 will be used to help students with the financial costs of University.
Get the Vote Out 20-Nov-14 SU President  Complete The Students' Union are working closely with Bristol City Council, South Glos Council and Bristol University Students' Union to encourage students to register to vote. Since October the Students' Union have run several voter registration events, including door knocking the Frenchay Student Village as well as on campus activities. Mental Health Support at UWE 20-Nov-14 VP Community and Welfare Live

The community and welfare officer has been working with Staff at UWE who are also representatives of Mental Health charities and passing them onto the VP education to help the current APT review which is being undertaken.

The Community and Welfare officer is running a student support campaign aimed at finding out what students thought about the support on campus and what provisions there are. He is currently in the process of writing the results up as a report, planning focus groups and lobbying for change. The community and welfare officer has been working with Staff at UWE who are also representatives of the charities Anorexia and Bulimia Care and Beat to increase visibility of support around eating disorders for example on the advice centre website and is currently looking into how to extend this to accommodation.

The Students' Union is a project partner in the Univesity's Resilience Project, which aims to support UWE students in accomodation with mental health considerations, this will involve mental health and specific training delivered to Wardens, Academic Staff, PAL leaders, Students' Union staff, Info Point staff and other important advisers. This project will launch in September 2015 under the Wellbeing Service.

Students' Union staff are attending mental health first aid training to ensure all activities can be inclusive and safe.  

Partnering Up With University in Gaza 20-Nov-14 VP Education Complete

VP Education has been in discussions with the Director of Academic Services about this. Unfortunately, the university does not have resource to establish a partnership in Gaza. It will however continue to strengthen links in country with an already established partnership with UWE.

Ongoing work has been taking place through ‘The Only Way is Wessex?’ consultation which involves engaging with bus operators and the university. Smartcards are now available on First Bus Services (http://www.firstgroup.com/ukbus/touchsmartcard/about.html)

There are ongoing conversations between the university, students’ union and bus operators around transport in the city. The Students’ Union will be writing to the Mayor of Bristol about student concerns.

International Politics on UWE Campuses and in UWE Students' Union; Maintaining a politically neutral 01-Apr-14 VP Education Complete

The Students' Union at UWE will continue to encourage all students who wish to campaign on political or social issues in a positive and inclusive manner and will be supported throughout their campaigns. Motions submitted to The Students' Union Meeting and Student council will be checked by VP Education to ensure it adheres with this policy. We will be running workshops prior to the The Students' Union Meeting on ‘How to Write a Motion’ which will outline this policy to students and give guidance on submission. 

Making the case for Student-Led Networks 01-Apr-14 VP Community and Welfare Complete

Advertising for Networks is now displayed on all campuses. Networks have been free to join for 2013/14 and 2014/15 academic year. Network membership has been rolled over for 2014/15.

The first Networks Awards was held in 2013/14, planning has begun for 2014/15 Awards.

The Students’ Union is currently recruiting a Democracy Coordinator, this staff member's role will be to review the current Governance Structures of the Students' Union including looking at the possibility of a petitions section of the website.

The Students’ Union has raised the integration of student cards into one single smart card. This process is currently delayed.

We no longer produce The Students' Union at UWE membership cards, and so integrating them is not feasible. 

Drink Aware, Have a Safe Night Out, and strengthening Student Communities 18-Feb-14 VP Community and Welfare Complete

Sports/Societies/Networks are currently able to book Red Bar as a space without the bar being open. A Number of student groups have given out water at SU nights during 2014/15 so far. A number of daytime and evening events were run in 2014/15 such as Crafternoon and City Bus Tour.

The Students’ Union hosted a Postgraduate Student Welcome.

The VP Community and Welfare will be running a 'Late Night Do It Right' campaign during Freshers' and beyond with these key messages.

The Students’ Union does not directly decide on what companies can advertise and sell on University campuses- this is at the discretion of the University. The Students' Union at UWE  has vetted conflicting organisations from the events and spaces under the control of the Union- e.g. Freshers Fair, SU bars. So far we have only had one case of a conflicting company and this has been handled by the Students’ Union by lobbying the University Marketing Department (who had granted permission for the conflicting company to operate on UWE campuses). This lobby resulted in the company being banned from campus by the university. No formal panel has been formed yet, it will be as and when necessary.
Lobbying has been completed through emails and meetings with the University Marketing Department.

A formal letter was written to the Board of Governors around the new Students’ Union Building. The President/Student Governor voiced and presented the importance of space in the building and that maximum budget cover should be considered.

The building is currently being built and is set to be delivered in June/July 2015.

It states the following: “Every effort will be made by CETS to end teaching no later than 13:00 on a Wednesday, for activities that conform to the University’s standard teaching week. However, activities which require specialist spaces, for example, may be scheduled later.”

Removal of 'Fit to Sit' 19-Nov-13 VP Education Live

Previous actions:

The university have passed a new package of regulations including Fit To Sit at Academic Board on 25 June 2014. It was formally noted in the minutes of this meeting that the Students’ Union opposes the policy being implemented.  The new regulations and procedures will come in to effect in September 2015.

A full review of the extenuating circumstances procedures has been undertaken with full input from VP Community & Welfare and VP Education. There was also widespread student consultation from Student Reps and Student Council members.

Sabbatical officers have been, and always will, ensure that the university does not implement any policy or procedure that encourages students to miss exams.

The union has considered NUS Policy relating to other universities in its conversations with UWE.

The Students' Union at UWE have not been approached by any other union about Fit To Sit. If this situation should arise his will be considered by the officer team on a case by case basis.

Next Steps:

VP Education and SU President to be a part of the Extenuating Circumstances Implementation Group. 

VP Education to work with Regulatory Framework Manager and establish communication plan to students on the Extenuating Circumstance Regulations.

Officer team to meet with Director of Academic Services to discuss current operational plans and present student concern on the wording of the policy.

Funding for Student Media is now allocated via the Societies Budget with no conditions attached. Note that Western Eye, along all student-led activities, still must comply with the The Students' Union at UWE Finance Policy.  Western Eye has any written obligation to cover stories regarding The Students' Union at UWE. As of yet no decisions have been made regarding the society or its future. The Students' Union at UWE are currently conducting a review of how we support our student media and its role within the Union. Western Eye will be involved in these discussions and will have a say on the decisions that affect its future. 

Motion to increase support for International Students at UWE 19-Nov-13 VP Community and Welfare Complete

The Students' Union ran a series of non-alcoholic events before and during Welcome Week. Namely; International Student Welcome, City Bus Tour, Boat Trip, Crafternoon. 

The Students' Union has recently recruited a Community Manager, part of their remit is to look at internationalisation and intergration.

Ban Advertising from Payday Lenders 19-Nov-13 SU President Complete

The Students’ Union do not advertise Payday Lenders and have worked in partnership with UWE to make sure this is the case across campuses.

At Freshers’ Fair 2014, a loan shark campaign was launched which warned students against Payday Lenders as well as advice being given by appropriate services by UWE/The Students' Union at UWE. We have a firm stance against Payday Lenders.

Ethical Banking 19-Nov-13 SU President Complete

We were using the Co-op Bank for investment and were due to consider moving to them fully. They lost their A Credit rating and according to our investment policy we can no longer use them as this proves too risky. 

The Union currently uses Natwest for its day to day banking i.e. it’s current accounts.

Surplus funds are invested with either Nationwide, TRIDOS or Lloyds .

Water Fountains 19-Nov-13 VP Societies and Communications Complete

Water fountain being installed by SU on Bower Ashton. Free water is available at the bar on all campuses. There are water fountains on level 4 and 5 of Frenchay Campus. A water fountain is planned for Glenside Student Centre.
 

The sustainability team have committed to fund 6 or 7 water bottle fillers around Frenchay Campus at key points – mainly near main entrances and cycle parking. This will likely include prominent positions in R Block, E Block, Q Block, B Block and the Students Union depending on feasibility. The aim is to reduce plastic bottle waste, encourage active travel and improve the student experience and wellbeing.

 

In other areas Estates have also agreed to make drinking water taps available such as by the S Block and M Block cycle showers. There is also a general refresh and increase of water fountains/bottle fillers taking place across the campus as part of a rolling Estates project.

UWE have allocated a community food garden on Frenchay Campus, and The Students' Union at UWE regularly run action days to look after this land. There is a herb bed in Cotswold Court on a trial basis. The Students' Union at UWE currently promote through our partnership with Incredible Edible Bristol, work with students to get involved through our Green Leaders programme and promote on our website.
