Welcome to the UWE Robotics Society

As a society we aim to bring together people interested in robotics and have fun while building robots and attending robotics events.  We encourage people to join from all backgrounds whether you are a complete beginner or an experienced roboteer. We can also offer support for personal projects, uni work, and even just teach you a skill like CAD or programming.

What you can expect

If you have a robot project you want to make or learn about, we will help you make your idea a reality. We can offer help for every stage of creation from concept to building to end testing. Even if you have no prior experience with electronics, programming, or even if you don't know what a robot is, we can help you. If you want to make a robot but don't know where to start or you would rather start with smaller steps, we can provide projects for you to work on.

There are opportunities to participate in many competitions and casual robot combat events held in and around Bristol. There are a variety of weight classes of fighting robot that we compete in from 25g to 15kg. We host an annual beetle weight (1.5kg) event at UWE which last year drew in over 30 competitors from around the UK, some of which had previously competed on BBC Robot Wars. Other events are organised by other organisations including University of Bristol BEEES, Bristol Bot Builders, and the Fighting Robot Association.

Making robots requires a wide range of skills, from maths to design. But don't let that scare you. We can teach you all the necessary skills to get you going.

We can teach

  • Programming (In C, C++, C#, Python etc.)
  • Computer Aided Design And Manufacture (CAD, CAM, 3D Printing, Laser Cutting etc.)
  • Electronics (Designing Circuits and PCBs)
  • Soldering
  • Communications (Wired and Wireless)
  • Other Engineering/Science Skills
