INTRODUCTION TO UNIVERSITY FOOTBALL
Here at UWE we have four competitive teams that, every Wednesday, play in the BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport) Leagues against various other Universities in the South West Region. We also involve ourselves in cup competitions annually and look forward to competing against University of Bristol in Varsity at the end of the season.
Last season was largely succesful for all four teams. Our 1st team had a strong campaign, staying in the highest division in the South West Region (Western 1a) after winning Western 1b the season previous to that. Our 2nd and 3rd teams also stayed in their respective divisions, pushing for promotion but both falling just short. Our 4th team convincingly won their division and will be playing one league higher this coming season.
All four teams train twice a week. Once at UWE's state of the art 4G astro turf pitch at Lockleaze Sports Centre, and once at a similarly impressive facitlity at Hillside Gardens. Both of these venues are within a half hour walk of Frenchay Campus and only a bus ride from almost anywhere else in Bristol, so travel isn't an issue regardless of where you're based.
Training takes place on Monday and Thursday evening's:
(TIMES COULD CHANGE DUE TO COVID RESTRICTIONS)
Monday's @ Lockleaze Sports Centre - 1st & 2nd Teams train 18:00 - 20:00
Monday's @ Lockleaze Sports Centre - 3rd & 4th Teams train 20:00 - 22:00
Thursday's @ Hillside Gardens - All Teams train 18:00 - 19:30
For the most part of last season we only trained on the Monday but universally felt that it would be hugely benefitial to all teams add an extra session per week in the hope to gain promotions and to progress further in the cup competitions this coming season.
DISRUPTION ON UNIVERSITY FOOTBALL
Apart from April's Varsity being cancelled, the Coronavirus thankfully didn't impact last year's football season all that much, as all four teams season's had come to an end prior to lockdown. This coming season will of course be a different story with BUCS announcing that no competitive football will be played until January. However, this doesn't mean that university football won't exist until 2021. As a club we're working to organise possible friendlies with local universities and inter-university tournaments alongside training running from October through until Christmas as planned. This is all subject to change so keep an eye out on this page for any extra information as we get it. All league matches will be played from Christmas onwards.
THE STRUCTURE OF THIS COMING SEASON
As mentioned previously, there is due to be no competitive football played until January 2021 at the earliest. However, we understand that BUCS are planning on having all leagues games played between January and April meaning that you won't be missing out on any football, albeit being delayed slightly. We're yet to hear anything confirmed about cup competitions and Varsity for the coming season but we'll update this page when we hear more. Follow us on Instagram for updates also, @uwefootballmens.
COSTS, KIT AND YOUR VALUE FOR MONEY
Your UWE Men's Football fee will cover a range of different things throughout the football season. The most important thing is your BUCS payment; your fee will totally cover the cost of playing in the BUCS league ensuring that you can have a full season of football. Your fee will also cover the cost of kit package. In this package you'll be given home top, shorts and socks as well as a training jumper. We have three other kits used for away games that are shared between the four teams every week which you'll also get to use. As well as kit and BUCS fees, you'll also be covered for travel to and from matches. Whether we're playing someone as local as Bath or a side further away such as Exeter, you'll be covered on coach travel. All teams will have coaches arranged for them ready to leave from Frenchay Campus on away days. Venues cost a lot of money to run, especially with us training twice weekly and paying matches at Lockleaze most week. Your fees will also cover the cost of renting out the 4G pitches. Finally, your fees will fund some socials. With money left over we're always keen to arrange socials and days out as a team. For example, in the last few years we've made it a habit of getting together and going to the races. This is something we'd be keen to do again when possible.
All of this coverage obviously comes at a cost. Last year the total cost came to about £220, with the previous year being a similar number. However, this year we've managed to get the overall cost of fees down to £165. This is a one time only payment at the start of the year which will cover you for all of the above. We see this as a very good value for money payment that will take your univrsity experience to the next level.
WHERE AND WHEN
PamPam is the place to be on a Wednesday night in Bristol, especially with your respective sports team. UWE Men's Football will once again feature in the VIP section of the go to club for UWE Sports Teams after their Wednesday night fixtures. Our social secretaries will be working hard to organise a number of themed night's throughout the year. Previously we've had Oktoberfest, Halloween, White Shirt Parties, Christmas Doos and a number of other fancy dress nights.
With the exception of last year due to COVID-19, the club aim to go on tour around Easter time. Last year we were due to go to Croatia with ILOVETOUR, with us going to Italy the year before. Hopefully everything clears up a little before the end of the academic year and we can arrange a similar trip towards the front end of the summer months. More on this will be posted when we're made aware of additional information.
