UWE Polo

Hi! Welcome to UWE Polo's page! The most fun and all-inclusive club UWE has to offer!

UWE Polo is a mixed club which takes advantage of the brilliant facilities at Druids Lodge Polo Club, in Wiltshire. They are internationally renowned for coaching Arena Polo in a full sized floodlit arena, and Grass Polo on 4 full-size bordered grounds. We have also recently introduced the opportunity to play at more clubs in the area, this has included Taunton Polo Club and Longdole Polo Club.

Our lessons and teams are open to all abilities and we welcome both riders and non-riders - NO previous experience of riding a horse is necessary! We offer 5 sessions a week at different times to fit around as many timetables as possible, 2 of which are completely dedicated to beginnners. There is also the opportunity to have joint lessons with other unis such as UoB, Exeter and Southampton, so there should always be at least one lesson a week to fit in with your student timetable.

Lessons cost £45 and transport to and from Druids is provided. Any drivers get £5 discount for each fresher they take, so if you drive and take a full car of freshers your lesson is only £25!

There is absolutely no pressure to have weekly lessons, all of our members go as and when their student budget allows!

Every Wednesday night in Bristol is Varsity Sports night and UWE Polo hold a range of regular socials, both themed and non-themed. This year they will be planned by our wonderful new Social Sec Lydia Ackland-Snow but we are always open to suggestions and will be holding socials on various days/evenings to allow as many people to participate as possible! If you don't drink then don't worry, there will be something for everyone to keep things interesting!

Each year we take part in the SUPA National Championships... 'Winter Nationals' runs over a weekend every February and is usually held in the arenas at Onley Grounds in Rugby, where we tend to stay in a hotel along with several other unis. 'Summer Nationals' runs over a weekend every June and is usually held outdoors at Offchurch Bury Polo Club  near Coventry, where we traditionally 'camp' (Polo style - think bell tents, sofas and paddling pools of gin!) for the weekend. There are over 80 teams traditionally that compete in Nationals, so there is plenty of opportunity to meet some great people from universities across the country!

In addition to Nationals, Druids host a University League on Fridays, a 'Pudding' Tournament for beginners in December, and a National League which will run from October to March/April - so plenty of opportunity to practice playing competitively if you'd like to! Again, there is no obligation to play competitively, but we do try to cater for everybody by offering the opportunity to play as little or as much as you'd like.

As if all that wasn't enough we are one of the few UWE clubs who try to combine social events with other universities. We regularly go to Exeter's Christmas Ball, have had invites to the University of Oxford's White Tie Ball at Blenheim Palace and try to organise socials with many other teams in the South West; including University of Bristol and University of Southampton.

Join our Facebook Group for more info, or contact us by email, we'd love to hear from you!
