The first ever standalone Varsity Netball event was a nailbiting afternoon between UoB and UWE on Sunday 11 February at SGS College.
The two teams have a fierce rivalry, with only 15 goals separating them over the last 5 years, making Netball one of the tightest sporting matches in the Bristol Varsity Series 2017-18.
It’s been an exciting series so far, with UOB taking the first point at Darts in November, and Team UWE soon levelling the playing field when UWE Bullets took victory at Friday Night Lights earlier this month.
So it was down to Netball to secure the lead for each of their university’s in the first ever standalone event of the series and the first ever women-only event since the series’ inception in 1995.
With nearly 200 supporters turning out from both sides to cheer on their teams, the first game was a real nail biter. Both sides played excellently, with Team UWE pulling ahead and managing to fight off the strong comeback from UOB in order to defend their lead 36-30 and take the title.
After the first teams had played, it was time for the alumni to take to the court, with Team UWE managing to win their second victory with impressive final score of 68-35.
Despite the two victories, it does not give Team UWE a Varsity point just yet but does leave them in a strong position to secure one when the remaining Netball fixtures are played on Varsity Day on 21 March.
The next event in the series is just around the corner with The Big Colour Run taking place at Coombe Dingle on Saturday 3 March. The colourful fun run is open to everyone – students, staff alumni and the wider Bristol community – so if you feel like getting involved, you can get a ticket here: http://www.varsityseries.com/varsity/fixtures/
