Candidate for the position of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Officer
Putting the "U" into LGBTQ
My name is Liberty Strong (yes that’s my real name), I’m a third year Politics and IR student here at UWE. Another thing I should probably mention is that I’m part of the LGBT community.
In fact, leaving home and coming to uni gave me the courage to come out at the age of 19. I understand this is the case for many other students too. But in my experience, there isn’t enough support for students during this important time. It’s daunting for us young people, and the LGBTQ+ students need a greater awareness that the services are there at their disposal.
I want to give the people of our small, underrepresented community a voice.
I want to encourage questioning students to speak out, and I am offering my own personal time to offer help and support to all students who are struggling in any way.
For those not a member of the LGBTQ+ community, my role is important to you because I am promoting equality across the board, and I may be supporting a friend or even flatmate.
Without an LGBT officer who is devoted to these causes, the community and more widely the student body is likely to suffer, with thousands of students’ voices going unheard.
I pledge to;
