Candidate for the position of NUS Conference Delegates
Putting UWE on the Map. Vote Jonny!
My name is Jonathan Wallcroft and I'm running to be an NUS conference delegate. I am currently the President of the Labour Society and Vice-President of the Politics and International Relations Society so I have become involved in University life already, and I believe this will translate well into being an NUS delegate. I have also been a town council candidate in my home town because I believe that now, more than ever, our voice as students needs to be heard.
I am a Third Year Politics student, so I have two years experience of being part of the UWE community under my belt and I'm determined to start giving something back now!
I want to be a voice for UWE, and UWE Students on the National Stage by attending the National Conference. My main concern is mental health issues; we have made a lot of progress recently towards increasing awareness of mental health issues - as well as improving the facilities on campus. However, I believe we can and should do more to create an environment at all universities where there is no stigma for sufferers and support for everyone to ensure we have a cohesive campus society.
Another obstacle to cohesion is the lack of participation in societies and Uni life. Unfortunately there are many reasons for lack of involvement, including lack of resources and effective promotion for some societies, and the fact that many students feel a disconnect between themselves and the Students Union – and don't see the relevance of it to their university experience. I hope to try and change that because I believe participation in the UWE community is an essential part of university – so I intend to be available to anyone from the university who has suggestions they might want to raise at the NUS conference to hopefully bridge this disconnect.
This means, that if elected I will endeavour to talk to- or canvass the opinions of - as many UWE students as possible to ensure that as many people as possible have their voices heard at the conference. I also promise to publish a full report into what happens at the conference for everyone to read – to ensure we are accountable to the student body.
Thank you for reading and I hope you will consider voting for me!
