Candidate for the position of Community and Welfare Officer
Welfare - I care.
Student welfare and community engagement are at the forefront of the things I do at UWE. Whether that's involvement in student safety initiatives as President of the Police Society, organising awareness talks about hate crime and sexual violence as President of the End It Now Campaign, raising awareness about mental health as President of the Mental Health Campaign, or just being a member of the UWE Welfare Committee.
I also sit on the South Gloucestershire Independent Advisory Group as the Student Representative, where I represent UWE students to the Police and Council, ensuring any potential welfare issue is given the attention it needs by police officers and councillors. This could be anything from gold burglaries targeting Asian members of the student community, to private landlords not upholding their side of the contract. Anything that is brought to me by the Students' Union or individuals within the student community will be taken to those meetings and discussed with the members present.
Before starting my Master's degree, I was a Student Representative for the duration of my degree. I was also a Departmental Representative in my second and third years. Before studying at UWE, I had also been a Student Rep at college and a Member of Youth Parliament (MYP) for North Bristol for two years. As an MYP, I spent a lot of time speaking to decision makers about issues that affected young people in North Bristol. Throughout this, representing my constituents was paramount.
If I am elected as your next Community and Welfare Officer, there are four main goals I want to achieve:
