Candidate for the position of Disabled Students' Officer
Be bright & vote for Sam C-Light
Hey Guys!
My name is Sam and I am hoping to become your disabled student officer here at UWE Bristol!
In my eyes, I don't see myself as ‘disabled’ but as a young person who may need a little bit more help from others to ‘enable’ themselves to be the best they can.
As your disabled student officer, I will be here to represent all disabled students and make sure that any issues and opinions during your time here get passed on to the Student Union Executive and hopefully sorted because I know, first hand, how irritating it can be for anyone to be held back by things that are not their fault.
My other aim as disabled student officer here at UWE Bristol is to ensure that students are made aware that simply because a disability may be clear to see, like mine as a wheelchair user, in every other aspect of student life we’re just like everyone else! Like most other young adults, going out and socialising, drinking, joining societies and getting out and about in Bristol is at the top of our agenda. And so, with your help I’d like to help break down the stigmas or preconceptions around disabilities which sometimes leaves us feeling isolated and able-bodied people unsure how to approach and interact with us, when really, we’re all just the same!
Alongside this, I will be campaigning on a number of issues, both local and national, that are on the minds of many disabled students here such as improving access within the city of Bristol alongside raising awareness for Trailblazers (Part of Muscular Dystrophy UK) who do an amazing job in campaigning for change and who provide guidance for young disabled people. However, their overall goal is to challenge the barriers in society that stop young disabled people from living full and independent lives, for which I am very passionate about. However, I am open to other suggestions of disability-related charities that students wish to campaign for.
The other purpose of my post is to work alongside societies at UWE who represent the often unheard interests & views of disabled students and to help these views get heard by more.
I hope you enjoyed reading this and I thank you for your support in this election!
