Ride, compete, connect – discover UWE Equestrian
UWE Equestrian is a welcoming, mixed social club for everyone – from complete beginners to experienced riders who compete regularly. For the 2025–2026 season, we’re offering BUCS training and competitions at Tumpy Green Equestrian Centre and Friendlies training and competitions at Urchinwood Manor, with one session a month and the flexibility to book more if you wish. Our Give It a Go sessions, also at Urchinwood Manor, are perfect for trying riding in a relaxed, supportive setting, again with the option to add extra sessions. Plus, we’re introducing our brand-new Socials Membership, giving you access to trips to the races, socials, and events with the club without ever having to get in the saddle. With high-quality lessons, exciting competitions, and a thriving social scene, this season is the perfect time to get involved with UWE Equestrian!
If you’re a confident rider seeking a new challenge during your time at university, why not apply for our BUCS teams? It’s the perfect opportunity to test yourself, represent the club, and take your riding to the next level. You’ll get the chance to showcase your skills in a competitive trials process, taking on a dynamic 70–90cm jumping course with a randomly assigned dressage movement.
If you’re a keen rider who wants to enjoy competing in a more relaxed and supportive environment, our Friendlies teams are a perfect fit. They’re a great way to experience competition at a lower level, have fun, and represent UWE without the added pressure of BUCS. Friendlies are the perfect way to ease back into competing in a supportive, low-pressure environment, helping you grow your confidence and enjoyment before making the step up to a BUCS team when you’re ready.
Our BUCS teams compete in a league format, aiming to qualify for regionals and then progress to nationals. BUCS 1s riders can qualify either individually or as a team, while BUCS 2s can qualify as a team only. Last year we were thrilled to see our first team captain, Abbie, qualify and compete at regionals — finishing an impressive 5th place and earning her spot at nationals. It’s an exciting and rewarding experience that combines competition, teamwork, and plenty of fun!
If you’ve ridden a bit before and can already walk, trot and canter, our Development Squad is the perfect next step. These sessions are designed to help you neaten up your skills, gain confidence, and start learning to jump in a relaxed, supportive environment. You’ll join monthly group lessons with our experienced coaches, working on your position, control and technique while having fun with like-minded riders. We’re also hoping to introduce a ‘mini’ competition at the end of the year, giving you the chance to put your new skills into practice in a friendly, low-pressure setting. It’s a brilliant way to build a solid foundation and prepare for moving up to our Friendlies teams in the future!
If you’ve never sat on a horse before but want to learn, this is the perfect place to start. Our GIAG sessions focus on helping complete beginners get comfortable around horses and learn the basics of riding in a relaxed, supportive setting. You’ll take part in monthly group lessons tailored to your level, building confidence step by step with friendly instructors and like-minded students. It’s a fantastic way to try something new at uni, pick up essential skills, and meet other horse lovers while you learn!
