Candidate for the position of President
Fight for what's right, vote for Zak
It is my intent to represent all UWE students and to do so I have come up with four key and realistic goals I will achieve by the end of my term in office. I have a number of smaller changes I'd like to make and I will let you know them in due course.
Freedom of Speech
In the 2016 University Free Speech Rankings UWE received a red score meaning that the university is a hostile environment for free speech. As an educational institution free speech is vital in allowing students to develop ideas and opinions on the world we live in. I will do the following to address this issue:
Referendum on leaving the National Union of Students
The NUS has evolved over the years to become a body that no longer represents students’ best interests. In the most recent financial report UWE SU spent over £45k on membership to the NUS, money I believe would be better spent elsewhere. I would like to see our Students’ Union thrive outside of it by leaving however I believe that this should be down to a democratic student referendum where every student has a voice in the matter.
Wider Representation
The Students’ Union President represents around 30,000 students. As your representative I will take that higher and have regular meetings with our local MP, Mayor of Bristol and local Councillors so that UWE students have a voice on local and national issues. Formal Dinners
Many universities hold regular formal dinners and they are great social events, a means of meeting new people and by inviting guests, can facilitate networking gains. I believe introducing these at UWE would be beneficial to the student body where students can develop their social skills and networking whilst simply having a good time.
Conclusion
I could promise you that I would sort out the buses and the car parking however people have been promising solutions to those problems for years with little or no success. For a realist with no false promises vote Zak to be your Students’ Union President.
