Candidate for the position of Vice President Education
My name is Uchenna Obikile and I would be honored to serve in the capacity of Vice President Education for 2016/2017.
A brief listing of my student engagement roles whilst at UWE include:
My deep passion for student engagement stemmed from my very first experience as a Student Rep at The International College. And now in my final year, I am still reaping the benefits of students’ voices all over UWE being heard and acted on. Also, being a Student Ambassador has afforded me a wealth of experience in International Students’ administration and helped to bolster my communication and administrative skills.
THE CHALLENGE
You will all agree with me that the University does it’s best to provide a variety of support systems for the different demographics of students that shape our diverse UWE.
How these resources are communicated to the different demographics is necessary and will affect the class of students we graduate who are confident that they will thoroughly excel BY being able to lay down the right career foundation blocks from as early as when they arrive, THEMSELVES.
Unfortunately, with each different program comes a unique level of complexity and rigor; and with each different progression path into UWE, comes a new background of previous knowledge and experience.
So we see a common trend of students who will keep being able to benefit from opportunities that aren’t directly linked to their program of study. And most students who do not simply do so because they have chosen School work (Which is their main aim) over these activities.
THE SOLUTION
To combat this, I believe that a stream-lined evaluation process targeting the main learning modules (for example, Critical Thinking) will aid the University efficiently allocate and if necessary integrate some of these essential, co-curricular activities that will feature uniquely in an environment peculiar to our career paths.
IF I AM ELECTED, I WILL:
- Create easier structures for Student Reps to Log Students concerns presented at Student Union and SRSF meetings for evaluation.
- Work hand-in-hand with ALL student representation bodies to ensure that no one feels like tuition is a waste of money.
