Let's Get More People Into Societies
Hey, I'm Dylan, and I am the current President of the Calisthenics Society.
I have enjoyed every moment of the past 2 years. Watching the society grow from 17 members to almost 100 has been incredibly rewarding. I am eager to use my experience leading Calisthenics in new and exciting ways.
Less than 10% of UWE's ~40,000 students are involved in a society. We can do better.
Societies bring a sense of community, something to look forward to and opportunity to build lasting friendships. Furthermore, studies have shown that those who are actively engaged in societies are 1.8 times more likely to have a job offer by the time of graduation.
Therefore, in my time as Vice - President, my aim is to:
Increase society involvement.
To do this, I must ensure that:
All students can afford to join and participate in a society.
Time and money. These are the two biggest factors that stop potential members from joining a society. I aim to ensure that every student who wants to participate is not stopped by them. I aim to give struggling students 1-1 support to find the best option for them.
Everyone has the opportunity to get involved.
Everybody, every gender, every race across every campus should have the opportunity to get involved in a society they are interested in. By working with societies to ensure their regular activities are inclusive and far-reaching, this can be achieved.
It is no secret that societies are underrepresented on the small campuses. I aim to invest a considerable amount of my time growing society's presence at these locations. This could be done by identifying students who are striving for more and aiding them in realising their aims.
Societies remain active throughout the year.
Freshers' fair provides the perfect lilypad for Sports and Societies at the start of the year. It is a shame that from then on, numbers just seem to dwindle. If you miss this, it seems your option is to wait until next year. I aim to run continual efforts throughout the year to increase society visibility and maintain retention throughout.
Fancy seeing societies grow?
Make sure you vote DYLAN for VP Societies.
