What experiences make me the best candidate?
Hello everyone!
My name is Umma Umara, and I am a second year Law student at UWE. As a student myself, I deeply understand the real challenges we face starting from financial pressures and accommodation costs to mental wellbeing and feeling supported at university.
Over the past year, I have actively worked to support students and strengthen our community. As an External Outreach Officer, I collaborated with Bristol City Council and UKHSA to promote sexual health awareness, including education on sexually transmitted infections and safe practices in UWE and UOB. I also took part in student campaigns and events on topics such as sustainable period products, and reducing alcohol and drug misuse. Moreover, serving as a student representative, I gathered student feedback, raised concerns with university presidents and signposted students to support services when needed. Additionally, my pro bono work gave me the opportunity to advocate for students on issues of sexual harassment and violence also providing guidance on their legal rights and the support available to them.
Key Priorities-
1. Expanding part-time job opportunities and paid internships:
I will collaborate with local food, retail, and other employers to expand flexible part-time job opportunities for students. I will also promote networking events and industry partnerships to help students access paid internships and career development opportunities.
2. Lower transport cost for students:
I will work with local transport providers to advocate for reduced bus fares and more student-friendly travel costs.
3. Advocating for affordable accommodation:
I will work with the University and the Students’ Union to raise student concerns about rising housing costs and push for more affordable accommodation options and clearer guidance for students facing financial difficulties.
4. Strengthening mental health and wellbeing support:
I want to promote a culture where students feel safe seeking help without fear of judgement. I will work to improve awareness of wellbeing services, mental health support, and financial or academic guidance available through the university so that no student feels they have to face their challenges alone.
5. Promoting affordable campus food:
I will work with the Students’ Union to encourage more student-friendly pricing, affordable meal deals, and initiatives such as weekly free-meal opportunities to help students manage the rising cost of living.
With your support, I will work to ensure that every student at UWE feels heard, supported, and part of a strong, inclusive community.
