There is something wrong with our student democracy. Voices which should be heard are ignored, and decisions cannot be made. I was a student councillor last year, and none of our meetings were able to do anything. This is because UWE’s student council is not fit for purpose. But we have an opportunity to fix this after our student governance review.
To fix this, I will:
Expand the student council to at least 35 with more representation for currently underengaged students and from our Welfare Officers, and have a reduced quorum. This means that illness and apathy can no longer gridlock us as happened last year, and it no longer gives five students the responsibility of speaking for 7000 each;
Publicise the minutes of all meetings by email so that all students have easy access to the proceedings;
Reform the student ideas system.
With these changes, we can have a system which will represent us all, and be accountable to us all.
