Candidate for the position of President
Clear Frames. Clear Goals. The Clear Choice.
My name is Jack Lovering and I am a third-year student of Politics and International Relations who has experience liaising with both students and staff due to a year spent as Department Representative for Health and Social Sciences, as well as experience representing the university outside of its boundaries through the SPARK program, going into schools to help raise aspirations of secondary school pupils. During my tenure as SU president my goals would include: Improving new and existing students’ on-campus lives; Continuing to improve the support given to ensure you can reach your potential; Maintaining and improving relations between the university and the wider Bristol community; and dealing with specific problems brought up by students... But how can we achieve these? On-Campus living: - More availability of dietary-requirement lunch options (Currently only 1-2 gluten-free salads on the SU shop meal deal, plus maintaining and improving Vegan and Halal options) - Cooking lessons as part of freshers week (Potentially working to create simple video recipes filmed in student accommodation with standard kitchen equipment) Support: - Striving to improve mental health services. - Support calls for Nursing student accommodation bursaries. - Renting guides with more accessible, improved information on what rights you have and what to expect from your student landlord AND your estate agent. How can we positively impact the community around us?: - Getting students more involved in the local community – one vision is to approach Bristol’s sports teams and event organizers to make tickets available for purchase through the SU. - Weekend parking to be made more widely available rather than sitting empty – alleviates parking congestion in Cheswick village and the surrounding area; a concern for both students and residents. - Part-time employment opportunities to be made more visible. Specific Problems: Blackwells closure: - Core textbooks to be made available (in print or online), eventually for all book-based subjects. - Repurpose unused rooms above E Block SU shop to host event to buy-back and resell 2nd hand textbooks. Library Improvements: - Installation of power outlets on the quiet floor study spaces. Underpinning these goals is a constant drive to find creative and sustainable ways to make life for UWE students of all ethnicities, faiths, races, genders and sexualities the best it can be. Life at university can be uncertain at times, but when it comes to your next SU president: The Future is Clear.
