Candidate for the position of President
Students Before Profits
My name is Ajmal Miah and I am running to be your President of the Students Union here at UWE.
My primary goal is to create an environment where every student is respected and able to perform to the maximum of their ability. It is paramount to me that the student experience is conducive to a learning environment and helps each and every one of you develop to the maximum of your ability. I wish to be part of a movement that wishes to create positive change on campus, reducing the cost of living and foods, encouraging interfaith dialogue between communities, and also mobilising for national issues to help better conditions for students not just at home, but everywhere else too.
I set up and subsequently chaired the Stand Up to Racism Society at UWE and have been at the heart of everything we do. UWE Stand Up to Racism has been active on campus, as we have been effective in not only organising meetings, but also being active in mobilising for events outside of campus. We have discussed ideas about how we can be more involved in activism, and to combat issues such as Islamophobia, homophobia, anti-semitism and homophobia. I will stand in solidarity with all oppressed groups, and am firmly of the belief that one must be able to practice whichever religion they wish to, express ideas and beliefs, and also be able to love who they want, free from external pressures and difficulties.
I will also seek to reduce term limit of full time officers to one year. Yes, our university have had fantastic individuals in the past lead our Student Union. But the student population drastically changes every year. I believe that it as a diverse, democratic body, we need to give students greater choice to be represented at this level, and also more opportunities to run for these positions!
Our goal is to have a Student Union that is not distant from the ordinary student, one that proactively engages with them on issues and on campaigns, and together we can create a place where we put Students before Profits. Thank you.
