The theme for LGBTQ+ History Month this year is "Behind the Lens", which celebrates the contribution of LGBTQ+ people to cinema and film. As part of this month, the University of Bristol, in collaboration with UWE, is screening "Portrait of a Lady on Fire" with an introduction by Dr. Lies Lanckman.
"A singularly rich period piece, Portrait of a Lady on Fire finds stirring, thought-provoking drama within a powerfully acted romance."
Portrait of a Lady on Fire is a 2019 French historical romantic drama film written and directed by Céline Sciamma, starring Noémie Merlant and Adèle Haenel. Set in France in the late 18th century, the film tells the story of an affair between an aristocrat and a painter commissioned to paint her portrait.
Portrait of a Lady on Fire was selected to compete for the Palme d'Or at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival. The film won the Queer Palm at Cannes, becoming the first film directed by a woman to win the award. Sciamma also won the award for Best Screenplay at Cannes.
Please note, this event is for the University of Bristol and UWE Bristol staff and students only.
