University is a great place to meet new people, make friends and build relationships. Understanding what makes a healthy relationship, and being able to spot the signs of an unhealthy one is important for your own wellbeing but also the wider university community.
Relationships can take many forms, whether it be with your family, friends, a romantic partner, housemates or coursemates. While realtionships can be incredibly fullfilling, unhealthy relationships can have really detrimental effects on the individuals involved.
Recognising Red Flags
The Students' Union at UWE and UWE Bristol recognise it can be difficult to recognise red flags in relationships because they always start subtley. We have created the video below to help support students in recognising behaviours that are unhealthy within a relationship, and to encourage you to reach out for support.
Supporting a friend in an unhealthy realtionship
We recognise that it can be really difficult seeing your friends in an unhealthy realtionship, and a lot of people are unsure what they can do to support the people they care about who are experiencing this. You do not need to have all of the answers, but being there for your friend and providing someone who will listen is often one of the most powerful things you can do.
