WHO ARE WE AND WHAT DO WE WANT?
It’s 2023 and we just saw the seven hottest days ever in the last 100,000 years hit from July 4th-10th. Although slow changes to less damaging and more sustainable ways of eating, heating our homes, travelling and working are important, they are not happening fast enough.
It’s growing increasingly unlikely, practically impossible, to limit global warming to below 1.5 degrees.
We are a group of students engaged in climate activism at UWE. We take part in activism around the UK with different campaigns and love talking to other people who are interested in why we’re doing this.
We think it’s unfair to educate people about a future that’s going to be fucking decimated by the climate crisis.
We believe that protest and non-violent direct action are necessary for creating social change. It’s not comfortable but when people stand up for what they believe in, massive changes can happen. Civil disobedience looks different for everyone and even the smallest or most playful actions can be powerful agents of change.
UWE is in the top 30 of sustainable universities, as evidenced by People and Planet, but it hasn’t met its carbon emissions reduction target. We want this to be the top priority for UWE. We want UWE to lobby local politicians and the government to make decreasing carbon emissions the top priority.
We want to see more investment in green and sustainable teams, staff and activities at UWE so it becomes a core part of the UWE offer to students. As a higher education institution, this is a responsibility that UWE can step into and be proud of.
We welcome all new members, those who have taken part in activism before and those who haven’t. We know we live in an unequal society which means that taking part in activism has different consequences for people depending on their race, gender, and ability.
If you have an idea about something you want to do, or want to be involved in our campaigns, drop us a message on instagram or our email.
Doing nothing isn’t an option.
