Association of British And Chinese University Students
UWEABACUS is UWE’s Chinese community society, bringing together students who feel homesick, miss the food and festivals from home, or are simply looking for friends to share new experiences with. We welcome Chinese and non-Chinese students alike, and we’re all about making UWE feel a little more like home!
China is home to 56 recognised ethnic groups, hundreds of regional dialects (from Mandarin and Cantonese to Hokkien and Shanghainese), and food that changes completely from one province to the next. Add to that a global Chinese diaspora spread across almost every corner of the world, and you get a culture with endless traditions, flavours and stories to share. Whether you grew up with it or are discovering it for the first time, we’d love for you to come and explore it with us!
Our events range from bi-weekly games nights with mahjong, board games and snacks, to hotpot dinners, karaoke nights, film nights and trips out around Bristol. We also celebrate the big festivals together, from Winter-formal to our Chinese New Year celebration and Lantern Festival, so no one has to spend them alone and far from home.
At the heart of it, UWEABACUS is a community. Our WhatsApp group is where members find people to go to events, concerts and trips with, so you’ll never have to turn up to something on your own.
Whether you’re from China, part of the Chinese diaspora, or completely new to Chinese culture, everyone is welcome! Follow us on Instagram @uweabacus, join our WhatsApp group, and come say hi at our next event.
四海之内皆兄弟: Within the four seas, we are all family!
