UWE-AI is a new and exciting, student-run autonomous race team competing in the IMechE Formula Student Artificial Intelligence (FS-AI) competition, offering students a real-world project to apply skills from computer science, electronics, and engineering courses. We aim to help students develop skills in programming, system design, and problem-solving by taking part in the FS-AI event, where students develop an autonomous system to run on a shared racecar, or build their own completely autonomous Formula Student-style car. You can see an example of AMZ using their own student-built car taking part in the competition at below:
As of 2023, UWE-AI is looking to run skills sessions for all members of the society to help get you hands on and familiar with our system. These will be aimed at an introductory level to each topic, with a chance to practically apply what you learn. Our skill sessions will be run by students and cover topics such as:
Skill sessions may occasionally feature talks from members of staff or members of industry.
The UWE-AI society is composed of a project lead who oversees all activities, as well as a number of department leads who manage development of individual aspects of our autonomous system. The aim is that new students will get to join a department and learn from the department lead during organised sessions, receiving valuable experience in their chosen area. These department sessions will be structured around aims and objectives for providing the best possible system for the Summer FS-AI competition, where everything we have worked on will be taken to Silverstone Race Circuit and put to the test against teams across the country and globe. After their first year, students will be given the opportunity to lead the department themselves, taking a more senior role and shaping the department as they wish. Doing this gives students an opportunity to both learn and lead while a part of our society, and can greatly improve your CV for industry.
Weekly meeting time and location: Every Wednesday at 14:00 in UWE Frenchay 2R017
