The CTF Falcons are a cyber security society committed to making a welcoming and supportive
environment to allow students and people of all backgrounds to improve their knowledge in the
cyber world, regardless of abilities or prior knowledge. We test our knowledge by taking part in
fun hacking events called Capture The Flags!

Who We Are?

We are the Falcons; UWE’s Cyber Security Society! We pride ourselves on creating a fun,
inclusive and hands-on environment where students can build practical cyber security skills
beyond the classroom. From red-teaming, such ethical hacking and pen-testing, to blue-
teaming, including incident response and digital forensics – our aim is to help students of all
backgrounds build their understanding of the cyber world and meet like-minded people!

What Do We Offer?

• Bootcamps & Hands-on Labs – extra-curricular learning, using tools and utilising skills that are used in the real cyber world (pen-testing, social engineering, malware analysis,etc.)
• Meetings with industry professionals – guest speakers and workshops, so that you can
  have a good look and understanding of the cyber industry.
• Exclusive events – access to internal and external events, allowing for networking
  opportunities with a vast number of companies and cyber experts!
• Social events – from relaxing movie nights to exciting nights out in the city centre, this is
  a great way to meet like-minded people and make new friends!
• Peer mentoring & extracurricular learning – from complete beginners to advanced
  learners, being part of the Falcons is a great way to expand your knowledge and get help
  from other students!
• Capture The Flag events – the most exciting part of being a member of the Falcons!
  Internal friendlies and external nationals, you will be able to put all your newly found
  knowledge into breaking the next vulnerability or cracking passwords faster than other
  teams in order to find the flags and bring your team to victory! These cyber competitions
  are a great way to test your knowledge, bridge any gaps, and win amazing prizes!

What Have We Done?

• Capture the Flag Competitions: Members have participated (and excelled!) at both internal and external CTFs, building their cyber security skills and gaining excellent
  teamworking experience.
• Cyber Conferences: Successfully organised and launched UWE’s Cyber Wing
  Conference, bringing together students, industry professionals and academics to
  discuss the latest trends in cyber security.
• Industry Networking: Through society events, workshops, and guest speaker sessions,
  the Falcon’s members have connected with countless cyber security professionals,
  fostering mentorship, collaborations and career opportunities!
• Hands-On Cyber Workshops: Hosted multiple workshops and bootcamps in areas
  such as penetration testing, social engineering, malware analysis, and cloud security,
  providing practical experience for members at all levels.

My course isn’t related to cyber security / computing – should I join?
As long as you’re interested in the cyber world, you will certainly benefit from being in the UWE
Falcons society! It doesn’t matter if you’re a complete beginner or a cyber wizard, you will be
welcomed to this community and you will learn at a pace that is comfortable for you!
