Our Sustainability Committee is a group of students working to make UWE a more environmentally conscious place
The Sustainability Committee is an opportunity for students who are passionate about sustainability to innovate and have the power to create positive change throughout UWE and beyond.
Create sustainable change within UWE and the wider community through events and campaigning. The committee can also shape the sustainability practice and credentials at The Students’ Union at UWE, and the wider UWE Bristol community.
Following campaign training run by Jo Campling from SOS UK, the Sustainability Committee have started to design our campaigns for the year, starting with the following:

We are also in the process of planning some events, so keep an eye out for these! Our next steps are to continue to plan these events, and conduct a mapping assessment of the green spaces at UWE.
Jack Priestly - Sustainability Officer
Jack is our 25/26 Sustainaiblity Officer. He brings a wealth of past experience in advocacy and campaigning, having previously worked as both a Student Ambassador, and a campaigner for the Plant-based Universities Initiative.
Jack is already hard at work to deliver on his manifesto commitments, as he outlined during his campaign last year:
Communication will continue to be a core value in how I operate as Sustainability Officer. My first goal is to cultivate a wide community of people interested in sustainability while fostering an open environment where everyone has a voice.
I will work with eco-conscious groups and individuals, like the Green Team, to host informative but educational events like quizzes, charity events and sustainability fairs. Sustainability fairs involve inviting local sustainable businesses and initiatives to come to campus and share their work.
I will work with both the Student's Union and UWE to offer more sustainable food options throughout the University's catering facilities. This will be a key priority if I am elected as I believe that making people more aware of where their food comes from and the impact that it has is a very achievable and realistic aim, with the resulting goal being to encourage people to make more sustainable choices.
I will aim to reduce waste on campus through improved recycling bin access. As well as encouraging campus food outlets to partner with Too Good To Go to reduce food waste and give students to purchase cheap food.
Tilly Elliston
I Joined the sustainability committee at UWE because I've always been inspired about protecting the environment and creating positive change. Growing up, I was proud to earn a Blue Peter badge for tree planting and I later took part in climate strikes in Oxford to stand up for action for climate change.
Studying real estate has made me even more aware of how much our buildings and developments affect the planet and I want to help make sure future projects protect wildlife and support biodiversity. Joining the committee is an exciting way to put my passion into practice, meet others who share the same values and learn how to create greener, more sustainable places for the future.
Holly Dixon
I'm Holly and I'm an MSc environmental consultancy student! I joined the sustainability committee because I want to help to make a positive change at UWE for the good of the planet!
Linda Arrey
I am currently an Environmental Management student at UWE and have a strong interest in sustainability and climate action. Joining the Sustainability Committee gives me the chance to turn practical steps to contribute to meaningful change, and promote sustainable practices within our community. I am excited to team up with others who think the same and work towards a greener future.
Bec Ackland
Hi I'm Bec, I'm a first year architecture student. The main reason I'm doing this subject is because I'm fascinated by the environmental impacts and opportunities it has. I joined the Green Team beacuse I enjoy doing things for my community, being from Bristol, whether thats volunteering for charities or doing my part for the environment.
Vanuja Jayaskera
I signed up for the Sustainability Committee because I am passionate about making our campus more environmentally friendly and taking actions that will help the environment. I want to be a part of a group that initiates meaningful projects, encourages sustainable behaviour, and runs campaigns that genuinely engage students.
UWE has a much stronger vision and mission around sustainability compared to many other universities. I want to help the university reach it's sustainability goals by getting involved, spreading awareness, and encouraging both students and staff to act responsibly. Being on this committee gives me the opportunity to make a meaningful impact, develop my abilities, and strengthen my leadership and organisational skills.
I am excited to help make our campus greener, especially during key moments like Green Week, Environmental Day, and other themed awareness weeks - by generating new ideas, planning events, and actively promoting eco-friendly behaviours.
Ben Long
'Hello everyone! My name is Ben and I'm in my second year of studying Architecture here at UWE. I joined the sustainability committee because I've always had a great passion for the natural world and our role within it. For me, learning to live and design more sustainably is a key step in shifting our role within the natural world from negative to positive. With that in mind, I'm excited to see what we can achieve together through the sustainability committee at UWE. See you around!
Eric Ramsey-Wade
I'm a second year Wildlife Ecology Student who likes tennis, volleyball and DND, with a passion for conservation and minimising climate impact.
Grace Akinleye
I'm Grace Akinleye, a Sustainable Food Systems student (MSc) at UWE.
My interest in sustainability, food systems and the sustainable development goals (SDGs) led to the choice of my course and now my inclusion in UWE Sustainability Committee.
As the external outreach officer, I am interested in building a relationship between the committee, the school and our sustainability activities with organizations and bodies within the Bristol and UK community for better integration and connection of the shcool with other social networks and systems.
I am committed to community development, sustainability, integration and knowledge sharing.
