Information about what to do in the case of an accident or injury, and the relevant forms to complete.
Accident & Injury Reporting
Despite taking all precautions, accidents can still occur during activites. In order for us to best support you if an injury occurs, all accidents and injuries must be reported using the accident report form here. Once received we will use this to support with insurance claims, if appropriate, or direct to physio or rehabilitation services as appropriate.
The reporting of any ‘Near Miss’ occurrence is also vital for the future safety of all individuals, as such information helps others to plan & prepare in order to avoid possible dangers.
Away Fixtures:
If a serious injury occurs at an away fixture The Students’ Union recommends that an ambulance is called to attend the casualty, as with at home fixtures. If the individual chooses not to seek immediate medical attention and wishes to return to Bristol before doing so, this is at their own risk.
If the injured person is taken to hospital by ambulance outside of Bristol, and unable to return on the transport provided to the fixture, The Students’ Union can support with reasonable repatriation costs. Please keep hold of the receipts for the expenses incurred as a result and contact suopportunities@uwe.ac.uk at the earliest convenience.
As with all trips, if there is an emergency outside of office hours, please contact UWE Bristol Gatehouse on 0117 32 82552 (24-hour line) who will contact the relevant staff member as appropriate.
Head Injuries
Concussion is a traumatic brain injury resulting in a disturbance of brain function. It affects the way a person thinks, feels and remembers things. Loss of consciousness (being ‘knocked out’) occurs in less than 10% of concussions and is not required to diagnose concussion. However, anyone who loses consciousness because of a head injury has had a concussion. Anyone with suspected concussion should be immediately removed from the field of play and assessed by an appropriate Healthcare Professional or access the NHS by calling 111 within 24 hours of the injury.

Equipment Accident & Incident Reporting
Some Club and Society activities require the use of Students' Union owed equipment (e.g. Boat Club, Gliding, Sailing), that may become damaged.
If an accident/incident occurs when taking part in an activity that leads to damage to a piece of equipment, an equipment accident report form (here) must be completed and returned to kelly.howard@uwe.ac.uk. This form must be completed in as much detail as possible and returned within 24 hours of the incident.
