Graphic Designer

Purpose of the Post

Provide successful communication-design in print and digital media.

The position shares with all other staff positions a general purpose which is: To work collectively for the attainment of the goals of the Union as expressed in the Constitution, Policy Book, and Strategic Plan and through the decisions of its committees.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

• Working creatively in print and digital formats using the Adobe Creative Suite of applications and other software.
• Working with SU internal ‘clients’ to provide promotional campaign planning support, understanding and meeting client needs and working to deadlines and budgets.
• Contribute to the overall graphic design of The Students’ Union’s website and e-communications. This may include designing creative concepts for ad-hoc microsites. 
• Provide copy writing, editing and proofing for advertising and web content.
• Support the Marketing Assistant in co-ordinating and publishing to digital media systems such as SUBTV display screens and other digital screens within UWE.
• Provide and support opportunities for student involvement in design & photography within UWE & The Students’ Union at UWE.
• Organising quotes with external printers and managing the design to print process.
• Manage the Large Format Printer, including stock levels and liaising with the maintenance provider regarding any issues.
• Play a key role in the development and use of The Students’ Union visual identity and its sub-brands.
• Design original logos and supporting identity materials for sub-brands.
• Co-ordinate the production of publications such as the Freshers’ Guide and Open Day materials. Playing an integral role in the planning, designing, proofing and printing processes.
• Provide original photography and source images. Publish photos to the photo library based on Flickr, and help manage this archive.
• To undertake other reasonable duties. 

Supervision and Work Planning

The postholder will be expected to work on his/her own initiative.

Special Notes and Conditions

The postholder will be required to undergo training.

Skills/Experience

Essential

• High standard of Education
• 1 to 2 years of graphic design work experience in a variety of media
• Experience of the print process and liaison with commercial printers
• Sourcing quotes and estimates, and placing print orders
• Excellent creative design and layout skills producing work for both print and digital formats
• Strong skills in Adobe Creative Suite software in particular Photoshop, Illustrator and Indesign.
• Excellent general PC and/or Mac skills
• Digital photography
• A positive ‘can do’ attitude and brimming with creative new ideas
• Demonstrate ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
• Self-motivation and excellent organisational skills
• Good interpersonal skills
• Demonstrate the ability to be a good team worker
• Excellent attention to detail
• Customer focused.

Desirable

• Design Degree
• Experience of student publications
• Organising a team
• Managing a budget
• Web and multimedia software: Flash, Dreamweaver and video editing
• Proof reading, copy writing
• Confident use of various IT and A/V equipment e.g. digital cameras, digital video cameras, digital projectors etc.

Additional Information

Rate of Pay: £19,872.

Holiday Entitlement: 27 days, as well as Bank Holidays and Closure Days.

Hours per Week: 37 hours per week.

Duration of Role: Permanent.   

Location: Based at Frenchay Campus. The postholder may be required to work at, or from any of the Union’s establishments.
