Student Sustainability Engagement Coordinator

Purpose of the Post

To operationally co-ordinate the engagement of UWE students in the sustainability agenda, through:

  • Delivery and development of the UWE Green Team, Sustainability Committee;
  • Empowering UWE students to challenge and contribute to the sustainability agenda at the University of the West of England and The Students’ Union;
  • Coordinating the student-led sustainability related volunteering projects; and
  • Supporting students to develop their own sustainability-related projects/community activity.

The position shares with all other staff positions a general purpose to work collectively for the attainment of the goals of the Students’ Union at UWE as expressed in the Constitution, Policy Book, and Strategic Plan and through the decisions of its committees.

 

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

The Green Team and Sustainability Committee

Working with the elected part-time sustainability officer, Sustainability Committee and Presidents:

  • Recruit UWE students to participate in a ‘Green Team’  from across all UWE campus sites
  • Recruit students to the elected Sustainability Committee
  • Support the Green Team/ Sustainability Committee to develop their own activities and campaigns to engage students on the sustainability agenda
  • Support elected students officers to challenge the University and Students’ Union on their Sustainable Development commitments
  • Coordinate the Greener Futures Award, engaging Sports Clubs and Societies in the Sustainability agenda. Reviewing the programme yearly to best engage these groups. Work with Opportunities Department and elected Vice-Presidents to recognise the success of student groups at yearly awards ceremonies
  • Work with UWE sustainability and external organisations to organise and promote workshops, events and interventions to inspire students to be part of a change culture
  • Work with the Marketing Department and UWE Sustainability to communicate information about Students’ Union, UWE and local events and campaigns to the student body
  • Support the elected Sustainability Officer to achieve their objectives alongside the Representation and Community Manager

Student-Led Sustainability Projects

  • Facilitate the achievement of the student-led projects aims, objectives and campaigns, through action plans and reviews with the project groups
  • Promote the ‘Change for Change’ funding for student-led projects and support successful applicants in setting up projects/events
  • Work with the Community Manager to nominate projects/ volunteers for local and national recognition awards

Sustainability-related Volunteering Programme

  • Operationally coordinate and promote the sustainability related volunteering projects (e.g. Community Garden and Greenspace Conservation Project)
  • Work with relevant external organisations to create new volunteering opportunities for students, meeting the changing need and priorities for students
  • Ensure risk assessments are drafted and project leaders are trained by project partners and relevant professionals to carry out their roles successfully

NUS Green Impact

  • Contribute to the Students’ Union’s Green Impact submission, through working with student groups and Students’ Union colleagues to create campaigns and events with evaluated impact
  • Support the Community Manager in creating case studies and that showcase the positive change achieved
  • Supporting the development of an embedded sustainability culture across the Students’ Union

Reporting, Finance and Health & Safety:

  • Supervise the Green Team Assistants, allocating tasks to support the admin of the sustainability engagement activity
  • Evaluate the success of the Green Team and related volunteering projects through feedback surveys
  • Ensure appropriate reward and recognition schemes are in place for students participating in the Green Team and related volunteering activities
  • Write reports as needed by the Community Manager on projects and achievements
  • Ensure that all activities adhere to relevant Health and Safety policies of the Students’ Union

Undertake any duties as may reasonably be expected by the Community Manager or such other tasks as may be necessary in order to achieve the objectives of the Community team and the Students’ Union.

 

 

Experience/Skills

Essential

  • Qualified to Degree level or A levels with equivalent experience
  • Involvement in sustainability or green related projects
  • Initiating, organising and promoting events and activities
  • Liaising/networking with a diverse range of people
  • Experience of volunteering roles; either as a volunteer, or a volunteer coordinator
  • Customer service
  • Understanding of the principles of sustainability
  • Fully proficient in the use of Microsoft Office
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent organisational skills and ability to prioritise a challenging workload
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Excellent telephone manner
  • Excellent presentation skills
  • Ability to motivate and inspire others

  • Current clean driving licence
  • Experience of a Higher Education institution or Students’ Union, as a staff member or student
  • Initiating, organising and promoting activities for students or young people
  • Understanding of the current issues in higher education and the needs of students within Higher Education
  • Experience of organising or delivering training
  • Working knowledge of health and safety

Additional Information

Rate of Pay: £20,269 per annum

Holiday Entitlement: 27 days annual leave + Bank Holidays + Closure Days

Hours per Week: 37 hours per week

Duration: Fixed term for 2 years

Location: Based at Frenchay Campus. The post holder may be required to work at, or from any of the Students’ Union’s establishments.
