Learn more about Extinction Rebellion and how to make a dent in climate change by taking action!
For years I was an armchair activist. I signed petitions on Change.org, I scoffed at videos of climate change deniers, and sometimes I even retweeted a stat or two. When I moved to Bristol to start a course at UWE, I thought I’d keep on doing this good work.
But then, while trying to make friends at free events, I accidentally went to a training session for Extinction Rebellion. It changed my whole outlook. I realised how important actual action is - and what’s more, I realised that anyone could take part.
On 15th April I’m going to London for the XR Spring Rebellion. It’s been a long and weird journey, and here are five tips I’ve learned along the way.
1. Speak up. Climate change is one of those subjects that everyone thinks about but no-one talks about. Under the surface, you’d be surprised just how many people are concerned with the environment. Start conversations with your friends and family. Find like-minded people and talk problems and solutions. Send emails to your councillor or your MP. If you’re keen, maybe research the facts and give a talk to your community.
2. Take the plunge. The problems in the world can seem insurmountable, so it’s tempting to put off doing anything. That very first step is always the hardest. So do something small! Extinction Rebellion hosts a weekly meeting on Wednesday evenings at the Malcolm X centre, where we have food and friendly faces - come along. Or if there’s an action happening, be there just to see what it’s like.
3. Find your niche. What is it about climate change or activism that interests you most? Do that. You’re never obliged to take part in anything you don’t care about - follow your passion, and that’s what will be your best work. Maybe it’s blocking roads and getting arrested. Maybe it’s learning how to live sustainably, or lobbying the government, or even just cooking for other people…there’s a place for all of these, in Extinction Rebellion and in the climate movement as a whole. While the problems we face are enormous, everyone’s contribution matters, no matter how small.
4. Don’t burn out. So many activists work too hard for too long - after all, there’s always more work to do. Eventually the stress becomes overwhelming and you start to suffer. Don’t let it happen - don’t put the world’s problems before your own! Take things slow. Think before saying yes to a job. Take time out to relax. And most importantly, tell people how you’re feeling. This is a crucial part of Extinction Rebellion: we have a team here dedicated to fostering a regenerative culture, and they provide emotional support before, after and during actions. Face it: we’re in it for the long haul with climate change. That makes it extra important to take care of yourself.
5. Rise up. Our whole culture today is built around staying indoors, sitting down, and going on your phone. As individuals we’re told we’re powerless, and that makes us apathetic. So when it’s time to act en masse we stay at home instead - or come outside just to hover with uncertainty on the sidewalk. But we’re not powerless. Don’t believe it for a second. When we come together as a group we can change the world. On 15th April, for two weeks, we are rebelling against the British government by taking over central London. Step off the sidewalk and come join us in the streets. Come celebrate life.
