Green Ambassadors will take their knowledge and enthusiasm for sustainability and green issues out and about and facilitate workshops and support projects in local schools on sustainability and environmental education.
Workshops could be around: What is climate change? What is sustainability? Energy use, audits, renewables, technology and gadgets; Water - access and use around the world, sanitation and links to health; Transport and fuel use and sustainable fuels; Healthy living and food – carbon cost of food production, grow your own food; Waste – audits, materials, 6 R’s: Reduce, Recycle, Re-use, Refuse, Rethink, Repair; Biodiversity – wildlife and nature, green spaces in the city; Sustainability and business – environmental impact of products, design vs. sustainability, locally sourced vs. fairtrade, sustainable enterprise… Schools will be encouraged to do an action project. The children and the school will choose their own projects and Green Ambassadors will support and monitor these projects. They could involve: building pond habitats or bug hotels; growing green walls; growing sculptures; use of renewables such as mini windmills or watermills; energy audits and waste audits; kitchen gardens; improving recycling facilities, upcycling projects and many more…
Volunteers will be expected to support at least one school and activities will run from February to July. Bristol is the European Green Capital in 2015. There will be opportunities to get involved in Your Green Futures conference at UWE and Big Green Week youth activities in June too.
