Happy World Toilet Day (we know you’ve been counting down the days)! Help us celebrate by pledging to flush only the three p’s (paper, pee and poo) and NOT the following down your toilet…
Most common offenders (UKDN Waterflow - Find out more HERE):
Roughly 7% of the oceans total plastic count comes from items we flush down the toilet - this weighs in at nearly two African bull elephants (10.5 tonnes)! Not only do these items release harmful chemicals into our oceans, but are often mistaken for food by marine life – and are now building up in our food chains!
At least one in four people in the UK pour cooking oil down the drain and almost half pour sauces (UKDN Waterflow). FOGs (fat, oil and greases), wet wipes and more, are all contributing to the evolving fatbergs that lurk beneath our cities. FOGs that solidify with variations in temperature form Fatbergs. The fatberg will grow in size as more FOGs end up in our water systems – and eventually block our sewers. The famous 250-metre long Whitechapel fatberg cost approximately £9m and took 9 weeks to clear!
Toilets (especially those with the dual flush buttons) can become stuck on a continual flush, which can waste up to 213 litres of water EVERY SINGLE DAY. To put that into perspective, that’s an average person’s daily water usage – that you could be paying for! We’re working hard to reduce our water usage at The SU and UWE - a Student Village project has saved £130,000 per year from water wasted from faulty toilets!
