Update from Scarlett (VP Community & Welfare)
Hate Crime was Scarlett’s (Vice President Community & Welfare) most recent campaign launched under the Anti-Abuse Campaign. We organised SARI (Stand Against Racism & Inequality) team to come and help support.
Hate Crime is a crime motivated by prejudice against a person because of their; ethnicity or race, disability - including mental health & learning difficulties, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion or belief, age, gender, marital or pregnancy status.
Hate Crime can be either a physical attack (like hitting), name calling or bad gestures, threats, harassment or intimidation, damage to property or nasty letters, emails, texts, phone calls, social media messages etc.

As well as SARI, UWE Cops also turned up to support the student campaign by promoting reporting crime if witnessed or victimised. Our new Disabled student officer 2015/16, Kevin Wilson, was supporting the Anti-Abuse network for the HateCrime Campaign along with part-time Community & Welfare Officer 2015/16, Chelsea McNulty. One student spoke;
“This is a great campaign to have in our university and I’d recommend joining the Anti-Abuse network, it’s so worthwhile” Catherine Casey (Law Student)
The main focus of the campaign was to create awareness and promote how to report such crimes / what to do in the event. There was a lot of interest from both staff and students and I’m very much looking forward to our next launch in the new academic year.
