Looking back this past year I have had such a successful year making a positive difference within our community.
Looking back this past year I have had such a successful year making a positive difference within our student community.
In no particular order, take a look at my top 5 highlights throughout this year
My first campaign and a great start to last year - The campaign was set up to warn students of the dangers of renting too fast as they maybe more susceptible to problems. This meaning they could suffer financial difficulty/loss, scam traps, and much more. Finding a place to live for the first time is very exciting and I wanted to keep that feeling of excitement by making it as engaging and creative as possible.
Creating the Anti-Abuse Campaign was a great project which I wanted to last, so making it a network group I could ensure my good work can continue in the future and be led by students throughout. The network now has near one hundred members that have all actively campaigned throughout this academic year on sexual abuse, violence, harassment, HateCrimes and sexual consent. As a result of this work our Anti-Abuse Ambassadors collected a huge total of 800 pledges on our very first launch day and the Students’ Union and UWE received White Ribbon Status. Find out more about the Anti-Abuse Campaign.
Leading on from the Anti-Abuse Campaign, our network decided to start campaigning on HateCrime. Joining up with SARI we delivered an awareness campaign around reporting if you witness crime. Check it out!
Speed Mating was set up for students in search of their ideal flatmate(s) in person rather than over social media. The event catered for somebody looking for a flatmate or a group of students looking for an extra person to live with. We managed to match over 80 people in total which was a great difference to our students.
Linked with Feel Good February I organised a range of events to encourage various discussions about sexual health and safe sex. The week will cover a range of topics on sex and sexual attitudes including STI’s, contraception, sexualities, relationships and consent. See the news article here.
This was the first ever Community Awards - a fantastic opportunity to celebrate all the great successes from networks, charity groups and green leaders over this past academic year. A lovely highlight I’ll remember from my first year as Vice President Community & Welfare. Check it out here.
A great year to see me into my next year as Vice President – Planning has begun and I’m really looking forward to a fresh start, with a great team and brand new building.
Wishing you all the very best success,
Scarlett Oliver
