In solidarity with Bristol Women’s Voice, UWE Bristol, and their Unison Branch, we would like to voice our concern over Floyd Mayweather being set to host an event at Bristol Marriot Hotel on Wednesday 8 March.
Mayweather has had a long history of violence against women, including convictions for domestic battery and harassment. By allowing Mayweather to speak on International Women’s Day is an insult to survivors of domestic abuse, and women everywhere. Estimates suggest that 43,340 women in Bristol are likely to have been victims of rape or sexual abuse at some point in their lifetime[i].
Domestic and sexual violence is something that needs to be tackled, and whilst a lot of work and effort has been done so far, there is still so much more to do . Granting Mayweather an opportunity to speak undoes so much of the hard work and campaigning that has happened in Bristol, and across the UK.
The Students’ Union has signed the Bristol Zero Tolerance pledge, and we take this commitment seriously. We have our own student-led campaign, End It Now, which supports students who have faced sexual violence, domestic abuse, and hate crimes. This campaign sets to eliminate social norms and to make sure every student feels not only safe, but also empowered to make change.
